Mariners 936

2024 Ancient Mariner Regatta Awards

The Mariner 936 Sea Scout ship from Dana Point has just sailed back from the Ancient Mariner
Regatta (AMR) at Cal Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California! And they didn’t return
empty-handed. They’ve brought back some incredibly awe-inspiring awards!

Each ship which scores satisfactory in all required events, excels in the ship events and scores
satisfactory in a certain number of team events, will receive a Class Award corresponding to the
degree of excellence demonstrated. Mariners brought home the Clipper which is when you
score 75% in ship events and 7 satisfactory team events, the Schooner which is 60% and above
in ship events and 5 satisfactory team events.

Competition comprises 27 distinct events, partitioned into essential activities and team
competitions. The mandatory events encompass uniform inspection, ship-related tasks like
handling the heaving line, knot tying, drills, and an enlightening Mariner quiz. Group
competitions, on the other hand, involve a pulling boat race, flotilla, rope climbing, bosun chair,
ring buoy, and swimming. These activities are evaluated either based on time or points earned.
This arrangement ensures a comprehensive, varied, and engaging experience for all
participants.

Mariners 936 were among 19 teams invited to participate in the events which they trained for
during their Spring Season. Our ship had 3 teams competing. Mariner Rico and Mariner
Decisively Indecisive both won the Clipper Award and Mariner Del-Mar won the Schooner
award. Mariner Sarah Ibenthal won the Fleet Drill trophy.

The Ancient Mariner Regatta, an event initiated in 1952, was established with the aim of
fostering and advocating the principles of Sea Scouting. The Regatta, over the years, has
served as a platform for promoting seamanship and leadership skills, essentially embodying the
spirit and values of Sea Scouting.

The spring regatta may be over, but the summer season is packed with open sailing
opportunities and a myriad of engaging events. The peak event, however, is set to commence in
the fall season, starting with an enlightening evening on Wednesday, August 21st, 2024. This is a chance to immerse yourself in our active community, network with other sailing aficionados,
and broaden your understanding of our program. Maintain your sailing enthusiasm by staying
informed through our website at www.mariners936.com.
